Introducing … CampbellRotary.org

As we move toward officially rechristening ourselves as the “Rotary Club of Campbell,” it makes sense to transition to a new website address as well.

CampbellRotary.org is currently under construction, but is live for you to review. Feedback is welcome! With the turn of the Rotary year — welcome President John Shannon — the new Rotary Theme “Make Dreams Real” provides further motivation for a site redesign.

For the moment, content is being mirrored on both the original RotaryCSJw site and on the new website. Eventually, the original site will be retired.

Relay for Life … with Janine Payton

Celebrate. Remember. Fight Back.

Can you believe that more than 1.3 million new cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed in the United States this year? Those are staggering statistics, but there is hope. Each of us can do something to save lives and help those already fighting this disease. That’s why I’ve decided to take action against cancer by supporting the American Cancer Society Relay For Life® event right here in my community.

Relay For Life is an overnight event that brings our community together to help support the American Cancer Society and its lifesaving mission to eliminate cancer as a major health problem. The Society works hard every day to prevent cancer and save lives by supporting groundbreaking research, affecting public policies that protect us from cancer, and educating people on how to prevent or detect cancer early. The Society helps people with cancer right here in our own community. And our efforts at Relay For Life can help the American Cancer Society to keep working toward a cancer-free future.

I want to invite you to show your support in the ongoing fight against cancer by joining us for this year’s event. Please click on the link below for more information, including details on the inspirational Survivors’ Lap and the moving Luminaria Ceremony. We hope to see you there! If you can’t join us, will you please visit the site and make a donation to support our efforts? Either way, you will make a real difference in the lives of people facing cancer and in the lives of the people who love them.

Our team- the Semi colons is named in honor of our friend Margot who has been battling colon cancer for 2 years.

I will be hosting a Luminaria decorating party at my home on Sunday, June 29th from 2:00-5:00pm. Please come by to make a Luminaria in honor or memory of someone you love.

Thank you!

Longtime Rotarian George Miskulin passed away earlier this week.

Marv Bamburg gave a nice remembrance of George at our meeting today. George was a dedicated Rotarian and he and his wife, Ginny, were were great supporters of our club. He will be sorely missed, but the memory of his sense of humor, wonderful smile and all of his dedicated work for our club will be long remembered.

Campbell City Manager Dan Rich

Luncheon Program: June 10, 2008

Today’s speaker was Campbell’s City Manager, Dan Rich, who shared the current economic outlook for the City of Campbell.

Rich’s presentation included descriptions of major revenue and expense items, and projected a growing “structural deficit” as expense rise faster than projected revenue. He also explained the ways that City services are funded and managed, providing helpful background. He and the elected City Clerk Anne Bybee also distributed a survey, and asked Campbell and non-Campbell residents alike to provide feedback on spending priorities.

—–

By complete coincidence, a brief report on the presentation appears in this week’s Campbell Reporter, which is now available on newspaper racks across town.

RotaryCSJw picked up the news release on a Twitter Feed published by the SJ Mercury News. For anyone interested in micro-blogging on Twitter, Campbell Rotary is on Twitter, maintaining a presence on your behalf. ;-)

New for EMQ: LCD TV from RotaryCSJw

Rotary Club of Campbell Joins the 21st Century

During the next month our meeting room will be upgraded by the addition of a large screen Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) Television that will make Power Point, video, and picture presentations many times better. When the question was first presented to the membership last month, it met with enthusiastic response.

We have looked at available big screen TV’s and found a very good, bright, 65 inch, high definition liquid crystal display (LCD) that fills every need.

Our non-profit status gets us a substantial discount, and the overall project cost estimate, including accessories, installation, and Contingency allowance, is $6,500. EMQ and the Club Board have reviewed and accepted the plan.

Initial sponsors among Club members (Davis, Highley, Ellington and Bamburg) have donated $2,500 (all tax-deductible) to Club Foundation for the project. Additional sponsors are welcome and should contact Marv Bamburg

To complete the project funding, every member is encouraged to offer a donation. Checks should go to Phil Neilsen, they should be made out to “Campbell San Jose West Rotary Foundation—display project.”

The suggested amount is $100 per member for those who find it convenient to donate this amount. Naturally, we will accept more. ;-)

This should be an outstanding program — a great time to bring a guest, especially a potential new member. We hope to see all of you at our meeting.

Have a happy and safe Memorial Day Weekend.

Ed Sayre: Nuclear Green Farms

Luncheon Program: May 20, 2008

Chris Vongsarath from the Campbell Reporter attended our luncheon meeting on Tuesday, May 20, along with our guest speaker Ed Syre. Chris filed this report, published on May 30:

Rotary speaker explains plan for ‘Nuclear Green Farms’

Ed Sayre doesn’t like to look at things as “waste.” He prefers to look at possibility instead.

Sayre is a Los Gatos resident with 40-plus years of developing and building jet engines, space propulsion systems and nuclear power plants for General Electric. He offered his thoughts on the California Nuclear Green Farm as the May 20 speaker at the Campbell Rotary Club.

According to Sayre, the nuclear farm would be the most efficient way to provide California with environmentally clean energy and fresh water, securing the economic and social well-being of the state at a relatively low cost to the economy. The farm would also increase food production while reducing California’s carbon footprint.

The article continues with additional perspective from Sayre’s presentation. Inexplicably — and fortunately for your wallet — the article does not mention any club members by name. ;-)

Sue Klear on Metro’s Front Page

It’s not actually her picture, but Dr. Sue Klear’s “Brain Music Therapy” appears on the cover of this week’s Metro newspaper:

I’M RELAXING in a chair upstairs inside Suite 11 of the historic Kiely House in Santa Clara, a Queen Anne Victorian dating back to the 19th century. Dr. Sue Klear, a licensed psychologist specializing in neurofeedback, has just attached seven sensors to my head and face with an odorless skin-prepping gel to prepare me for the initial stages of Brain Music Therapy, an experimental treatment for insomnia, anxiety, depression and stress.

The treatment records an individual’s brain waves using an Electroencephalogram (EEG), analyzes them and then converts them into two piano tracks—one “relaxing file” and one “activating file.” These are eventually burned onto a CD for the patient to play while going to sleep and after waking up, the idea being that the musical sounds form a correlation to your specific brain waves in order to help eliminate imbalanced brain activity. So, theoretically, you end up sleeping much better and function more productively during the day.

Read the full story about Brain Music Therapy on Metro’s website.

If you’ve got the paper edition in your hand, the story starts on Page 26, and Sue’s picture appears a few pages later. She’s also pictured online attaching sensors to the reporter’s head … undoubtedly brainwashing him to portray Rotary in a positive light … ;-)

Wait a minute … does the article mention Rotary?

No Meeting April 8

RotaryCSJw will not have a meeting on April 8, due to the District 5170 Annual Conference staring on Friday, April 11.

If you are not signed up for at least one of the Conference events, please sign-up on-line before Sunday, April 5; Fax registrations must be received by April 8. You can register on-site, but it will cost you an extra $5.00 per event.

The club will pay for “new members” going to the new member breakfast and for all women going to the Women’s Saturday Luncheon … but you have to register (the club will reimburse you).

Area 8 has the highest percentage of members registered for the whole District — Congratulations to us!
